Bunch
What it is
Three receivers aligned tightly together, within about a yard of each other.
Why it matters
Bunch is an anti-man formation before it is anything else: press coverage becomes nearly impossible because defenders cannot get to their men without running into each other, and legal traffic does the rest. Against zone it works differently, distorting the distribution so two receivers arrive in one defender's area from an unexpected angle. Defenses answer it with banjo and lock rules — a way of trading men at the release rather than chasing through the mess.

Programs call this bunch, cluster, stack or nasty split. The Coach answers to any of them.

Why press coverage becomes almost impossible against this alignment. The alignment comes from the engine’s own front resolver against real offensive splits, so it is a picture the simulator genuinely produces — not a diagram drawn to make a point.
