Catch point

OffenseTechniqueWRTECBS

What it is

The place and moment the ball arrives, and the contested space both players are entitled to.

Why it matters

The catch point is where the rules and the technique meet: the receiver may play the ball, the defender may play the ball, and neither may play the man before it arrives. Winning it is about late hands, attacking the ball at its highest point, and knowing where the sideline is. It is also the most frequently misjudged moment on film, because contact that looks violent is usually legal and contact that looks incidental often is not.

Also called

Programs call this catch point, high point, contested catch or attack the ball. The Coach answers to any of them.
