What it is
Three defenders split the deep field into thirds, with four underneath.
Why it matters
The most common shell in football because it fits the run: a safety walks down and the defense keeps an extra hat in the box while still capping every deep route. Its cost is the underneath flat and the seam, which is why the smash concept and four verticals exist. The corners play with outside leverage and bail, because they own everything deep and outside and have no help there.
