Deep quarter
What it is
Responsibility for a quarter of the deep field, usually with match rules keyed to number two.
Why it matters
A quarter defender is not simply deeper than a half defender — he is reading a specific receiver and will come off his landmark entirely if that receiver does not go vertical. That is the whole reason quarters gets a safety into the run fit while still showing two-high before the snap.
Also called
Programs call this quarter, quarters or read number two. The Coach answers to any of them.
See it on the field
A two-high shell that plays like an eight-man front once the safeties read number two. The alignment comes from the engine’s own front resolver against real offensive splits, so it is a picture the simulator genuinely produces — not a diagram drawn to make a point.
