Doubles
What it is
Two eligible receivers to each side — the balanced spread formation.
Why it matters
Doubles asks the defense no question about strength and every question about matchups: with the formation balanced, the coverage cannot rotate to a strong side without creating a weak one. It is the cleanest formation from which to run the same concept to either side and let the quarterback pick the half he likes, which is why it is the base look of most spread passing games.

Programs call this doubles, deuce, two by two, 2x2 or spread. The Coach answers to any of them.
