What it is
The two rows of short lines that the ball is placed on, which split the field into a wide side and a short side.
Why it matters
Hash placement is the reason field and boundary are different jobs. High-school hashes are far wider apart than professional ones, so a high-school offense on the hash has a genuinely enormous field side and a genuinely cramped boundary — and every coverage rule that mentions field or boundary exists because of that asymmetry. It is also why the same play call is a different play from the left hash than from the right.
