High-low read

What it is
Two routes at different depths in the same defender's area, so covering one leaves the other open.
Why it matters
The high-low is the fundamental unit of the passing game against zone: one defender, two receivers, one decision. The quarterback does not read the receivers at all — he reads the defender, and throws to whichever route the defender left. Curl-flat, smash and stick are all the same idea aimed at different defenders.
Also called
Programs call this high low, vertical stretch, two on one or read the defender. The Coach answers to any of them.
