Pedal and drive
DefenseTechniqueCBSILB
What it is
Reading the receiver's break out of the backpedal and driving downhill on the throw.
Why it matters
This is the payoff technique of off coverage: everything about the cushion, the pedal and the eyes exists so the defender can plant and come forward at the moment the ball is released. The plant foot is opposite the direction of the break, and the first step should be at the ball rather than at the receiver — the difference between an interception and a tackle after the catch.
Also called
Programs call this plant and drive, break on the ball or click and close. The Coach answers to any of them.
