Guard (G)

OffensePositionGOL

What it is

The linemen either side of the centre, who double-team interior linemen and pull in gap schemes.

Why it matters

Guards do the two most physical jobs on the line: displacing a nose tackle as half of a double team, and pulling into a hole to lead-block a linebacker. Both are short-area power tasks, which is why guards are usually the least tall and most dense players in the group, and why their pad level is scrutinised more than anyone's.

Also called

Programs call this G, guard, puller or interior. The Coach answers to any of them.
