Holder
Special teamsPositionPQB
What it is
The player who receives the snap on a placekick, sets the ball and rotates the laces away from the kicker.
Why it matters
The holder is usually the punter or a backup quarterback, because the job requires soft hands and the ability to run or throw if the play breaks down. Spot, tilt and laces are all his responsibility, and a ball held a few degrees off vertical changes the flight of a kick more than most players believe.
Also called
Programs call this holder, spot or laces out. The Coach answers to any of them.
