Tight end (TE)
OffensePositionTE
What it is
The hybrid: a blocker who can be attached to the line and a receiver who can be detached from it.
Why it matters
The tight end is valuable precisely because his presence does not tell the defense what is coming — the same personnel can produce a run-heavy formation or an empty set. That flexibility is only real if he can actually block a defensive end and actually beat a linebacker; a tight end who can do only one becomes a personnel-grouping tell the defense will happily read.
Also called
Programs call this TE, Y, the tight end, flex TE or move TE. The Coach answers to any of them.
