What it is
The ball-handling players — quarterback, backs, receivers and tight ends.
Why it matters
A loose but useful grouping: these are the players whose alignment can change without a substitution, which is what makes formation variety possible at all. In practice terms they share the fundamentals of catching, ball security and open-field running, which is why they are usually coached together in individual periods even though their positions have nothing else in common.
