What it is
Dropping to a landmark and defending what enters it, without matching a specific receiver.
Why it matters
The simplest zone teaching there is, and the reason it survives: eleven defenders getting to eleven spots with eyes on the quarterback is coachable in a week. It gives up the sit-down route in the seam, which is precisely what pattern match was invented to fix — so the choice between them is really a choice about how much install time a program has.
