What it is
Pursue the ball from behind, taking away cutback rather than holding the edge.
Why it matters
The backside defender chases flat down the line to eliminate cutback and boot. Chase and contain are mutually exclusive on the same defender on the same play - a defender told to chase has surrendered the edge to someone else, which must be accounted for in the fit.
Also called
Programs call this backside chase or trail the play. The Coach answers to any of them.
