Contain

DefenseAssignmentDEOLBEDGECB

What it is

Keep the ball inside and in front. The contain defender does not allow the ball carrier to cross his outside shoulder.

Why it matters

Contain is an assignment, not a technique - several techniques satisfy it. The contain player must never be reached or hooked, and on pass must not allow the quarterback to escape outside the pocket. Losing contain is the single most common cause of an explosive perimeter run.
