Cut block

OffenseTechniqueOLCGTTERB

What it is

Blocking a defender at or below the thigh to put him on the ground and cut off pursuit.

Why it matters

The cut is a legality question before it is a technique question, and the rules differ sharply by level — many high-school and youth associations restrict or ban it outright, and it is always illegal from the side or back away from the play. Where legal, it is used on the backside of zone runs to stop pursuit without having to sustain a block. Teaching it requires knowing exactly what your association permits.

Also called
