Cutoff / scoop block

OffenseTechniqueOLCGT

What it is

A backside block that keeps a pursuing defender from crossing the blocker's face and chasing the play down.

Why it matters

Cutoff is what makes cutback lanes exist. The backside of every zone run is a race: if the backside linemen can get their helmets across the defenders' playside shoulders, the pursuit is walled off and the back can bend; if they cannot, the play has only the frontside. A scoop is the two-man version of the same idea.

Also called

Programs call this cutoff, scoop, backside seal or get across his face. The Coach answers to any of them.
