Deep half
What it is
Responsibility for half the deep field, played from the hash with width to the sideline.
Why it matters
The half-field safety's problem is the corner route: he is asked to cover from the middle of the field to the sideline, and the only way that arithmetic works is by starting on the hash with depth and reading the release of number one. Four verticals attacks him by putting two seams in one half and asking him to choose.
Also called
Programs call this half, deep half or two-deep safety. The Coach answers to any of them.
See it on the field
Two safeties split the deep field; the corners are short-zone players, not deep ones. The alignment comes from the engine’s own front resolver against real offensive splits, so it is a picture the simulator genuinely produces — not a diagram drawn to make a point.
