What it is
Five eligible receivers spread out with no back in the backfield.
Why it matters
Empty tells the defense the ball is coming out and tells the offense exactly how many rushers it can block: five linemen against whatever comes. That certainty runs both ways, which is why empty is a pressure invitation and also a pressure solver — with five receivers out, every defender covering one is a defender not rushing, and the quarterback can find the free rusher before the snap because there is nobody else to account for him.
