Field zones
What it is
The named regions of the field — backed up, open field, fringe, red zone, goal line — each of which changes the call sheet.
Why it matters
A field zone is a constraint on the playbook rather than a place. Backed up removes plays that risk a safety; the red zone removes the deep ball because there is no field behind the defense, which is exactly why man coverage and Cover 0 appear there; the fringe is the awkward band where a fourth down decision and a long field goal are both live. Good call sheets are organised by zone before they are organised by anything else.
