Gap run
What it is
Linemen block named men and specific gaps, with a down block, a kickout on the edge and a puller inserting.
Why it matters
Gap scheme is a system for being violent in a known place: the point of attack is decided before the snap, the down blocks build a wall, the kickout defines the edge and the puller arrives with a running start. It out-leverages a front rather than reading it, which is why it beats a defense that is slanting away and why it struggles against one that spills every block. The back's read is much simpler than in zone — go where the puller goes — and the scheme's failures are almost always a puller who went inside a spilling defender instead of wrapping around him.
