Zone run

OffenseSchemeOLCGTRBTE

What it is

Linemen block an area and a track in unison, and the back reads the resulting displacement to choose his lane.

Why it matters

Zone is a system for being right without knowing the defense: nobody is assigned a named man, so a stunt, a slant or a late walk-up does not break the play — the movement simply changes where the lane appears. That is why it installs in a week and why it survives against fronts nobody scouted. What it asks in return is a back who will press the line before he cuts and linemen whose footwork is identical, because a seam opens wherever one man's timing differs from his neighbour's.
