Hip flip

DefenseTechniqueCBS

What it is

Turning the hips to run in the other direction without gathering or crossing the feet.

Why it matters

Every double move in football is an attack on this: the receiver's job is to make the defender flip once, then make him flip again before he has recovered. Taught as a snap of the near hip and a drive of the far arm so the turn happens in one motion rather than step-gather-turn. A defender who has to gather to flip is beaten by the second break even if he read the first one correctly.

Also called

Programs call this flip, transition, open and go or turn and run. The Coach answers to any of them.
