What it is
The underneath zone from the hash out to the curl, about ten to twelve yards deep.
Why it matters
The hook defender's landmark is a spot but his job is a route: get width to the curl, keep eyes on the quarterback and never let a crossing route run clean behind him. Most zone completions in the middle of the field come from a hook defender who chased the first thing he saw and vacated the window behind it.

Programs call this hook, curl, hook to curl or seam-hook. The Coach answers to any of them.
