What it is
Fullback and tailback stacked directly behind an under-centre quarterback.
Why it matters
The I is the classic downhill formation: the tailback is seven yards deep with a running start and can go either direction, and the fullback is a lead blocker who arrives at the hole a step ahead of him. It gives away nothing about direction and everything about intent, which is why it is a short-yardage and play-action formation rather than a spread one.
