Leverage
What it is
Any advantage of position or angle that lets one player control another — of pads, of hands, or of field.
Why it matters
Almost every coaching correction in football is a leverage correction wearing different words. It appears in three distinct senses that share a principle and nothing else: PAD leverage is vertical, about who is under whom; HAND leverage is about who controls the inside of the chest; FIELD leverage is horizontal and vertical position relative to a receiver and to help. A player who is told he 'lost leverage' has to know which of the three was meant, because the fixes have nothing in common. The unifying principle is that leverage is taken before contact, not during it — every one of the three is decided by the first two steps.
