Combo block

OffenseTechniqueOLCGT

What it is

Two blockers start on a down lineman, then one climbs to a linebacker once the first is secured.

Why it matters

The difference from a double team is intent: a combo always plans to release one man to the second level. The post man secures the defender and the drive man climbs - releasing too early surrenders the down lineman, too late lets the linebacker run free. Teaching this timing is the heart of zone blocking.

Also called

Programs call this deuce to backer, ace or combo to the mike. The Coach answers to any of them.
