Outside leverage
What it is
Aligning on the outside shoulder of a receiver to take away everything breaking out and force the route inside to help.
Why it matters
Outside leverage is the Cover 3 corner's alignment and the flat defender's: it funnels every route into the middle of the field where the linebackers and the free safety live. It also keeps a corner in position to be the force player against a perimeter run, which is why it so often travels with a single-high call.
