Centre (C)
OffensePositionCOL
What it is
The lineman who snaps the ball and declares the front and the protection.
Why it matters
The centre is the only lineman who begins every play doing two things at once — delivering the ball and blocking a man who is often aligned directly over him. His identification call sets the assignments for the other four, so a wrong call is a five-man error. In practice the position is chosen for intelligence and communication at least as much as for size.
Also called
Programs call this C, the centre, the pivot or make the call. The Coach answers to any of them.
