Slide protection

OffenseSchemeOLCGTRB

What it is

The line steps in unison to one side, each man taking the gap next to him rather than a named rusher.

Why it matters

Slide is zone blocking for the pass: it is immune to stunts and games because every lineman is responsible for an area, and a looping rusher simply becomes the next man's problem. What it cannot do is account for more rushers than blockers on the away side, which is why a slide call always has a back or a hot route underneath it. Its counterpart, man protection, wins one-on-ones but can be twisted apart.

Also called

Programs call this slide, half slide, full slide or gap protection. The Coach answers to any of them.
