Long snapper (LS)

Special teamsPositionLS

What it is

The specialist who snaps for punts and placekicks, and then becomes a coverage player.

Why it matters

The long snapper is the clearest example in football of a position judged only by its failures: a good snap is invisible and a bad one is a turning point. The two snaps are different skills — a punt snap travels about fifteen yards with rotation, a placekick snap seven with a specific laces position for the holder.

Also called

Programs call this LS, snapper or deep snapper. The Coach answers to any of them.
