Glossary
Wide receiver (WR)
OffensePositionWR
What it is
A split-out pass catcher, responsible for beating coverage at the release, at the break and at the catch point.
Why it matters
A receiver's route is three separate wins: getting off the line against press, creating separation at the break, and finishing through contact. The best of them also block, because every perimeter run depends on a receiver being willing to hold a stalk block for three seconds with the ball nowhere near him. Splits and release plans are the parts of the job an audience never sees.
Also called
Programs call this WR, receiver, X, Z, slot or wideout. The Coach answers to any of them.
