What it is
The ordered list of receivers a quarterback works through, tied to the rhythm of his drop.
Why it matters
A progression is a clock as much as a list: the first read is available at the top of the drop, the second on the hitch, the third on the reset — and a quarterback who is late to one is late to all of them. Good progressions are built so consecutive reads are close together in the field of vision, since a quarterback cannot honestly scan from one sideline to the other in the time a pocket lasts.
