Dropback pass

OffenseSchemeQBOLWRTERB

What it is

A pass built on the quarterback retreating to a set depth, with the protection forming a pocket around him.

Why it matters

Dropback is the honest passing game: no run fake, no movement, nothing but a concept against a coverage. Its structure is a contract between the drop and the routes — the ball comes out on a specific step, and a receiver who is late or a lineman who loses early breaks the contract in the same way. It is the family the rest of the passing game is defined against.

Also called

Programs call this dropback, drop back, straight drop or pocket pass. The Coach answers to any of them.
