What it is
How a receiver gets off the line against a defender trying to disrupt him.
Why it matters
A release is a plan, not a reaction: against press the receiver decides before the snap whether he is going inside, outside, or attacking the defender's hands, and he does it with feet first and hands second. The footwork options — a hard jab, a slide step, a swipe of the jam — are all attempts to make the defender commit his hands to a place the receiver is not going. Losing three yards at the line breaks the timing of the entire concept behind it.
