Sight adjustment
What it is
A receiver changing his route based on the coverage he sees after the snap, on a rule both he and the quarterback know.
Why it matters
Sight adjust is the difference between a route and an answer: against press the receiver converts to a fade, against off coverage he sits, against a two-high safety he bends the seam. It is the highest-trust element in any passing game, because the quarterback throws to where the rule says the receiver will be rather than to where he can see him. Programs with limited practice time restrict it deliberately for exactly that reason.
Also called
Programs call this sight adjust, convert the route, option route or read route. The Coach answers to any of them.
