Singleback
OffenseFormationQBRBTE
What it is
One running back behind the quarterback with no fullback, and the extra man used as a tight end or receiver.
Why it matters
Singleback is what happens when the extra blocker is worth more on the line or split out than in the backfield. It keeps the downhill track of under-centre football while adding a receiver to the picture, and it is the most common formation family in the modern run game because zone schemes do not need a lead blocker.
Also called
Programs call this singleback, ace or one back. The Coach answers to any of them.
