Tempo
What it is
The speed at which an offense snaps the ball, used to deny the defense substitutions, adjustments and disguise.
Why it matters
Tempo is an information weapon before it is a conditioning one. A defense that cannot substitute is stuck in the personnel it has, and a defense that must line up immediately cannot disguise or stem. The trade is that the offense also gives up its own adjustments, and that a fast three-and-out puts its defense straight back on the field — which is why most programs carry several tempos rather than one.
