Chip block
OffenseTechniqueRBTE
What it is
A back or tight end delivering a blow to a rusher on his way out into a route.
Why it matters
A chip is a compromise between blocking and releasing: it costs the rusher his timing and the back a step, and it is the standard way of helping a tackle against an elite edge rusher without keeping a man in to block. The blow must land on the way past — a back who stops to chip has kept himself in protection without meaning to.
Also called
Programs call this chip, chip and release or help the tackle. The Coach answers to any of them.
