The front seven
What it is
The defensive linemen and linebackers together — the players whose first job is the run fit.
Why it matters
Front seven is a way of talking about run defense as one system: gaps are only defended if every man in the group accounts for one, so the unit is judged as a fit rather than as seven performances. The phrase becomes misleading in nickel, where a defensive back is doing a linebacker's job — which is exactly why 'the box' has largely replaced it in modern coaching language.
