What it is
The moment the quarterback and back ride the football together while the quarterback reads a key defender.
Why it matters
The read defender's behaviour at the mesh determines give or pull. Everything the defence does to option - slow play, crash, exchange - is aimed at corrupting this read.
Also called
Programs call this the mesh or ride and decide. The Coach answers to any of them.
