Play action
What it is
Faking a run to hold or move the second level, then throwing behind them.
Why it matters
Play action is a lie told to linebackers, and its value is measured entirely in how many steps they take forward. That means it works because of the run game, not instead of it — but it also means the fake must match a run the defense has actually seen, with the same line movement and the same backfield path. The classic error is a fake that only the quarterback and the back are running, while five linemen pass-set behind them and give the whole thing away.

Programs call this play action, PA, boot or fake and throw. The Coach answers to any of them.

Why a play-action fake from here is a different thing from a fake in the gun. The alignment comes from the engine’s own front resolver against real offensive splits, so it is a picture the simulator genuinely produces — not a diagram drawn to make a point.
