Fullback (FB)

OffensePositionFB

What it is

A backfield blocker who leads through the hole, and occasionally carries or catches.

Why it matters

The fullback is a specialist in a collision that happens at full speed in a small space: he must arrive at the hole square, on the correct shoulder of the defender, and a step ahead of the ball carrier. The position has largely been absorbed into the H-back and move tight end roles, which do the same job from a different alignment and can also release into routes.

Programs call this FB, lead blocker, H-back or iso back. The Coach answers to any of them.
