Quarterback (QB)

OffensePositionQB

What it is

The player who receives the snap and is responsible for the pre-snap picture, the read and the delivery.

Why it matters

The quarterback's job is decision-making under a clock that is only a few seconds long: identify the front and the shell, know the answer to pressure before it comes, work the progression in order, and get the ball out on the timing the concept was built on. Physical traits set the ceiling, but the position is graded on whether the ball went to the right place on time — which is why so much quarterback coaching is about eyes and feet rather than about the arm.

Also called

Programs call this QB, signal caller or the trigger. The Coach answers to any of them.
