What it is
A defender sits in the intermediate middle with eyes on the quarterback, ready to take the first inside-breaking route.
Why it matters
The robber is the answer to the dig and the crosser that man coverage chases from behind. He shows as a two-high safety and drops into the hole late, so the picture the quarterback reads before the snap is not the one he throws into. It is a disguise call as much as a coverage call, and its value collapses the moment the robber declares early.
