What it is
Man coverage underneath with one free safety in the deep middle.
Why it matters
The free safety is the whole point: he lets the corners play with inside leverage and trust help over the top, which is what makes press survivable against a vertical release. A defender in Cover 1 should know before the snap which half of the receiver he is giving up, and it should be the half the safety can reach. Often paired with a rat in the hole to take the crosser the man defenders are chasing from behind.
