What it is
Two safeties splitting the deep field, which opens the middle and takes a defender out of the box.
Why it matters
Two-high is a run-fit decision as much as a coverage one: the box is lighter, so the front has to hold up with fewer hats, and quarters exists precisely to get one of those safeties back into the fit after the read. A quarterback reading two high knows the middle of the field is open, which is what makes the dig and the deep cross live calls.

Programs call this two shell, MOFO, middle of field open or split safeties. The Coach answers to any of them.
