Blocking schemes
What it is
The named ways a play assigns blockers: zone (areas and tracks), gap (named men and pullers), and man (one blocker, one rusher).
Why it matters
Every run play in football is one of three answers to the same question — who blocks whom. Zone assigns areas so the scheme is immune to movement but needs identical timing; gap assigns men so the point of attack is known but penetration hurts; man protection wins one-on-ones but can be twisted apart. Individual blocks below are the vocabulary those schemes are written in, and the same block appears in several schemes doing different jobs.
