Read option (zone read)

OffenseSchemeQBRBOL

What it is

Inside zone blocked normally with one defender deliberately left unblocked, whom the quarterback reads to give or keep.

Why it matters

The read option is arithmetic: by declining to block one defender, the offense gains a blocker everywhere else and makes the unblocked man wrong whichever way he goes. That is the whole idea, and it is why the play survives against fronts that outnumber it. The read is a decision about one man's shoulders, not about the whole defense.

Both sides of it

Running it

The line blocks inside zone and leaves the backside end unblocked. At the mesh the quarterback rides the back and watches that end: if he crashes down on the back, pull and run around him; if he stays home or widens, give. The ride must be long enough to be real — a quarterback who has decided before the mesh is running two plays badly instead of one well.

Stopping it

Take away the read itself. The read defender either slow-plays the mesh and keeps both threats in front of him, or attacks the quarterback's outside shoulder to force an immediate decision — but the choice must be paired: if he takes the quarterback, someone must scrape over the top for the back. A scrape exchange is the standard answer. What loses is a read defender who commits without a partner behind him.
